FAQs: Copying AIA Contract Documents

Can I post a draft document or a completed document on a website either for use on a specific project or to describe my firm or company?

You may not post to a public website any AIA Contract Document unless you have a separately written license from the AIA. Requests for a license may be made by email to copyright@aia.org or by calling (202) 626-7348.

 

Can I scan a document in order to complete or use the document? Can I retype a document into a word processing program in order to complete or use the document?

No. Either scanning or retyping an AIA Contract Document without written permission of the AIA violates federal copyright law.

 

Can I take a provision from an AIA Contract Document and put it into another contract I am writing?

No. Inserting text from an AIA Contract Document into a non-AIA document without written permission of the AIA violates federal copyright law. Requests for such permission may be made by sending an email to copyright@aia.org or by calling (202) 626-7348.

 

Can I make a copy of an unused paper AIA Contract Document?

No. AIA Contract Documents are copyrighted works. Copying a blank AIA Contract Document without written permission from the AIA is a violation of federal copyright law.
